Caustic soda — sodium hydroxide (NaOH) — is one of the most widely used industrial chemicals in India, central to soap and detergent making, textiles, pulp and paper, water treatment and chemical processing. If you’re buying it, the first decision is usually form: solid flakes or liquid lye.
Flakes vs lye: the practical difference
Caustic soda flakes are the solid form, typically 98–99% NaOH. They’re easy to store, ship and dose by weight, and they have a long shelf life when kept dry and sealed. The trade-off is that dissolving flakes is exothermic — it releases significant heat — so they must be added slowly to water with proper handling.
Caustic lye is the liquid form — a sodium hydroxide solution. The two concentrations you’ll see most often are 48% (the common commercial strength) and 32%. Lye is convenient where you already dose liquids and want to avoid dissolving solids on site, but it’s heavier to transport per unit of active NaOH and needs compatible storage.
A simple rule of thumb:
- Choose flakes when you want concentrated material, lower freight per tonne of NaOH, and long storage.
- Choose lye when your process is liquid-fed and you’d rather not handle dissolution in-house.
Grades you’ll encounter
Most commodity supply is industrial / commercial grade, which suits the large majority of applications. Some buyers ask for analytical or lab grade where tighter purity matters. Brand-sourced material (for example from Grasim or GACL) is common where consistency and authorisation are important.
When you enquire, it helps to state:
- Form (flakes or lye)
- Concentration (e.g. 48% lye, or 99% flakes)
- Grade (industrial vs analytical)
- Packaging (bags for flakes; cans, carboys or tankers for lye)
- Quantity and delivery city (for a freight-inclusive quote)
Handling and storage essentials
Caustic soda is corrosive. Store sealed, in a cool, dry place away from acids and moisture, and handle with appropriate PPE — gloves and eye protection at minimum. Because dissolving generates heat, always add caustic to water rather than the reverse, and never to hot water in bulk. Always review the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) before handling, and request a Certificate of Analysis (COA) for batch-specific values.
